Grasslands for Grazing Field Day - with a special focus on Serrated Tussock
We are running a series of Grasslands for Grazing field days with a special focus on Serrated Tussock... the next being Saturday 12th March at Grattai, details below.
Come along to one or more! Botobolar, Bocoble, Piambong, Yarrabin, Grattai, Wattle Flat... hopefully there is one happening near you! Register Now...
Are you interested in learning more about the variety of plants growing in your area? What makes some species (both desirable and undesirable) move in, what makes others disappear, and how grasslands can evolve and become more balanced overtime?
On Saturday 12th March, local landholder Gordon Guscott is hosting a field day with Botanist / Grazier Christine McRae to take a look at some of the plants growing in the Grattai area. We will learn about which are the ‘good guys’ and which species we want to keep out of Grattai... what your animals can eat and what they will struggle on. One plant we will look at in particular is Serrated Tussock (a bad guy).
Killing established Serrated Tussock plants with chemical is one “tool in the belt” for managing this weed. Two of the most commonly used chemicals are Flupropanate (eg; Taskforce®) and Glyphosate (eg; Roundup®). On Wednesday 16th March, Erudgere landholder, James Mort is hosting a field day with Bill Dobbie from Taskforce, and Melissa Tengrove from Nufarm (distributors of Roundup) who will explain how each of these chemicals work, how best to apply them, and how they impact on other plants in your paddock. During the field day we will take a look at some Serrated Tussock that was treated last spring with Roundup, and on a nearby property, with Taskforce.
What’s so bad about Serrated Tussock?
A perennial grass from South America, Serrated Tussock has such a low digestibility that livestock can starve on it... even when it’s green.
Serrated Tussock looks similar to some native tussock grasses and can go unnoticed in pastures for many years until significant (and costly) infestations have developed
